Mamdani suggested that Netanyahu should face arrest upon visiting the city due to an International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant. Despite these comments, Netanyahu has confirmed his plans to travel to New York in September to attend the United Nations General Assembly.
Netanyahu firmly rejected the ICC’s war crimes allegations, labeling them as “bogus” and asserting that the charges lack legitimacy. The Israeli leader’s upcoming visit has drawn attention amid the ongoing debate over the ICC’s jurisdiction and the associated accusations. Although Mamdani acknowledged that New York City does not possess the legal authority to enforce the ICC warrant, he expressed his belief that the U.S. federal government should intervene. Netanyahu has expressed concern about the growing political divisions concerning Israel within the United States, voicing particular worry over rising antisemitism. He noted that many Jewish residents in New York are feeling increasingly unsafe, a sentiment he attributes to these widening divisions.
