Zelenskyy: Ukraine Lacked Early Warning Before Russian Missile Strikes on Kyiv

by admin477351

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on Tuesday that Ukraine did not receive prior warning from its international allies before a Russian ballistic missile attack on Kyiv. The attack, which occurred on Monday, resulted in significant damage to civilian infrastructure, as five missiles struck various civilian targets.

Zelenskyy emphasized the critical importance of timely intelligence sharing to protect lives, noting that early warnings about ballistic missile launches allow civilians and emergency services to prepare for incoming attacks. Despite the absence of a warning in this instance, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha suggested that intelligence cooperation with international partners is ongoing. He implied that the lack of forewarning could be related to the specific type of Russian weapon used in the attack.

This incident has occurred amid ongoing concerns about U.S. intelligence support for Ukraine. Reports indicate that American officials had previously cautioned their Ukrainian counterparts about the Trump administration potentially suspending intelligence sharing. Nonetheless, Ukrainian officials continue to stress the importance of such cooperation, particularly in detecting ballistic missile launches and long-range bomber activity.

Tensions have also heightened over attacks on energy infrastructure. Former U.S. President Donald Trump has urged Ukraine to cease attacks on Russian oil refineries and announced an agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding diesel supplies. Trump claimed that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to an energy ceasefire, but Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine has not received confirmation of such an arrangement.

Zelenskyy accused Russia of persisting in its attacks on Ukrainian energy facilities despite the reported ceasefire. He mentioned that Ukraine had temporarily refrained from targeting Russian energy infrastructure following the U.S. announcement but insisted that any suspension of attacks must be mutual and backed by credible guarantees.

Meanwhile, Russian strikes have continued to inflict civilian casualties and cause widespread damage across Ukraine. In a separate incident in Kharkiv, Zelenskyy reported that a residential building was destroyed, resulting in four deaths and 41 injuries.

In response to the increasing intensity of Russian attacks on cities and energy infrastructure, particularly as winter approaches, Ukraine has appealed to its partners for additional air-defense support, including the deployment of Patriot missile systems.
