Yuli Edelstein Exits Likud, Announces Formation of New Political Movement

Senior Israeli lawmaker Yuli Edelstein has made the decision to exit Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party, setting the stage for a new political journey as Israel gears up for its forthcoming general election. Edelstein, whose political career has been marked by a firm stance on national security, announced that he will not compete in the party’s leadership primaries scheduled for August 4. Instead, he plans to embark on a new political initiative, signaling a fresh chapter in his political career.

Edelstein’s departure stems from escalating disagreements with the current government, particularly regarding contentious legislation aimed at exempting numerous ultra-Orthodox (Haredi) men from mandatory military service. As a staunch advocate for more stringent military service requirements, he has consistently opposed government efforts to protect draft evaders from facing criminal charges. His opposition to these measures led to his removal from the position of chairman of the Knesset’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee last year.

Reports indicate that Edelstein is currently in discussions with former Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked and other conservative figures about forming a new center-right political alliance. This potential new alliance aims to attract voters seeking an alternative within Israel’s right-wing bloc, potentially reshaping the political landscape. Edelstein’s move may offer a fresh choice for voters disillusioned with existing right-wing options.

Former military chief Gadi Eisenkot has expressed support for Edelstein’s decision, commending his dedication to national security and military service. Eisenkot’s endorsement underscores the significance of Edelstein’s departure and highlights the potential impact of his new political path on Israel’s upcoming elections, expected to take place by late October. As parties prepare for the electoral race, Edelstein’s move injects an element of uncertainty and excitement into the political dynamics.
