Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has condemned a deadly missile attack by the Houthi movement on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, which reportedly resulted in the deaths of at least 12 people and injuries to over 300. This incident has further escalated tensions within the ongoing Yemen conflict.
Netanyahu labeled the strike as a “horrific terrorist attack” and extended condolences to the families of the victims. He emphasized the need for a unified response to terrorism and highlighted the importance of protecting civilians and maintaining regional security.
The attack on the airport, which was targeted again on Sunday, has led to significant disruptions in Riyadh. Saudi aviation authorities have confirmed additional injuries and are conducting damage assessments and safety checks. The facility remains closed following the initial attack.
As a result of the escalation, Saudi authorities have temporarily suspended in-person classes, moving schools to remote learning. Despite these disruptions, a major international energy conference in the capital is still set to proceed as planned.
The Saudi-led coalition, which backs Yemen’s internationally recognized government against the Iran-supported Houthi rebels, continues to be engaged in an intensifying conflict. The Houthis have claimed responsibility for attacks on Saudi airports and energy facilities and have warned airlines and travelers against using much of the kingdom’s airspace.
In retaliation, the Houthis have accused Saudi Arabia of conducting strikes in Sanaa, Yemen’s capital, alleging that a child was killed and several people were injured. Saudi authorities have yet to respond to these claims.
The escalating conflict has raised concerns about the security of civilian infrastructure and the potential disruption of shipping through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a critical maritime route connecting the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden. Any further escalation could pose threats to regional energy supplies and international maritime trade. In response to the growing concerns, U.S. President Donald Trump has announced plans to speak with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman regarding the situation.
