Japan and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have pledged a total of $3 million to foster environmentally sustainable practices in the mining sector of Kazakhstan. Announced on October 30, this initiative is set to advance the country’s rare metals and rare earth minerals industry by promoting stronger environmental regulations, adopting advanced green technologies, and implementing digital monitoring systems.
The project, to be executed by the UNDP in collaboration with Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Industry and Construction, seeks to align the extraction and processing of these critical minerals with international environmental standards. Kazakhstan, which has identified over 120 deposits of rare metals and rare earth minerals, stands to benefit from the growing global demand for such resources, provided they are mined responsibly.
A key focus of the initiative is the early identification of environmental risks, preventing pollution, and enhancing monitoring systems before mining activities scale up. This approach aims to integrate modern green technologies and international environmental standards into Kazakhstan’s mineral production sector, as emphasized by Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Industry and Construction.
Japan has reiterated its commitment to this project as part of its broader strategy to support green development and regional resilience in Central Asia. The partnership is expected to promote responsible mining practices, protect local communities, and safeguard ecosystems, thereby enabling Kazakhstan to harness the economic potential of its mineral resources responsibly.
