The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) hosted a two-day meeting in Ljubljana, Slovenia, bringing together 18 representatives from Eastern European member states to discuss the implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention. This gathering served as a platform to address national legislation, capacity-building programs, and other pressing issues related to chemical safety and international cooperation. A significant emphasis was placed on the challenges and best practices required to strengthen regional collaboration in preventing the proliferation of chemical weapons.

The agenda featured presentations from participating countries, an overview of OPCW’s ongoing initiatives, and in-depth discussions on contemporary issues, including the impact of artificial intelligence on chemical safety. The essential role that academia plays in ensuring the safe use of chemicals and preventing the spread of weapons of mass destruction was highlighted throughout the event. This focus underscores the international commitment to maintaining strict safety standards in the chemical industry.

Slovenia, an active collaborator with the OPCW, upholds the tenets of the Chemical Weapons Convention, which aims to eliminate chemical weapons and prevent their future use. This international treaty, with 193 State Parties, is recognized as one of the most effective and widely ratified agreements. In Slovenia, the Chemicals Office carries the responsibility for national implementation, overseeing industrial activities involving strategic chemicals and partnering with the OPCW for international inspections.

On May 12, Slovenia joined the OPCW Executive Council, the organization’s governing body dedicated to ensuring compliance with the Chemical Weapons Convention. Over its two-year tenure, Slovenia aims to bolster efforts to prevent chemical weapons proliferation and enhance global trust and security. During his opening address at the OPCW Regional Meeting, Boštjan Peršin from the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs emphasized Slovenia’s commitment to promoting the peaceful and secure use of chemistry and advancing new technologies. By co-organizing the Regional Meeting, Slovenia showcases its dedication to upholding the highest standards of chemical safety and transparency.
