Google is expanding its engineering footprint in Israel with the creation of a new team dedicated to developing artificial intelligence (AI) chips for a variety of edge devices, including robots and autonomous systems. This marks a significant step in Google’s broader strategy to enhance its capabilities in AI hardware design.
The initiative will be led by Guy Kaminitz, a former R&D executive from the Israeli AI chipmaker Hailo. Kaminitz will serve as the head of silicon engineering, overseeing the development of Edge AI processors that enable devices to perform AI tasks independently of cloud computing. These processors are crucial for applications in robotics, autonomous vehicles, drones, industrial systems, and smart cameras, among other technologies.
To support this effort, Google is actively recruiting dozens of engineers in various roles such as chip validation, physical design, verification, automation, and machine-learning hardware architecture. This recruitment drive underscores the company’s commitment to bolstering its engineering capabilities in the region.
Google’s expansion into chip design in Israel began in 2021, although the company has maintained a presence in the country since 2005. The Israeli teams have been instrumental in advancing research and development in areas such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, natural language processing, and machine perception.
This latest development highlights Google’s strategic focus on enhancing its AI and chip design capabilities, positioning itself at the forefront of technology innovation in edge computing.
