An official from the US State Department has announced that Israel has pulled back from several positions in southern Lebanon that it had previously occupied during its hostilities with Hezbollah. This development is seen as a constructive move toward easing tensions in the region.
The US has encouraged Lebanon’s armed forces to assume control over these areas and dismantle any weapons and military infrastructure associated with militant groups. This step is believed to facilitate the return of displaced families, aid in reconstruction, and reinforce Lebanese sovereignty.
The declaration comes amid ongoing talks between Israel and Lebanon, mediated by the US, aimed at reducing border clashes and enhancing security. These discussions are part of broader regional initiatives addressing the strained relations between Israel and Iran.
Despite the US’s announcement, Lebanese security sources have reported being unaware of any Israeli withdrawal from the so-called buffer zone in southern Lebanon. As of now, there has been no immediate comment from Israel regarding these claims.
The US official did not specify the precise locations or the extent of the areas from which Israeli forces are reported to have retreated.
